This meeting informed attendees about ballot initiatives happening in Missouri. We also had sign-up opportunities for members who wanted to get involved and/or volunteer.
We welcomed the following speakers: Paul Washington from Missouri Jobs with Justice talked about how unions & workers' rights impact the political landscape in Missouri and why the "Right to Work" repeal ballot initiative matters; Dr. Vernon Howard with KC for $15 discussed the upcoming election on August 8th and the fight to pass a fifteen dollar per hour living wage in Kansas City; And finally, Sean Soendker Nicholson with Clean Missouri explained their ballot initiative and how they propose to get big money out of politics.
On Tuesday, July 18th, before Noon, the Senate planned to take the important Motion to Proceed (MTP) vote to allow the bill to go to the floor for debate. Kansas residents joined us to ask Senator Moran to vote NO on this motion. Senator Moran said that he wouldn't support a bill that didn't meet these four criteria and we planned to hold him to his word.
1. Must be affordable/protect those w/pre-existing conditions
2. Must protect rural health care
3. Medicaid should sufficiently cover services
4. Shouldn't stifle job growth
