Celebrate the 98th Year of 19th Amendment: Women's Right to Vote
It's Women's Equality Week!
This week women across Kansas City will get together to celebrate the 98th anniversary of winning the right to vote! We'll examine our intersectional history and build on our strength and expand our local and national political power. There are many great events to choose from.
We're going to start the week, though, by heading over to one of our favorite progressive hangouts in KCMO (Bier Station) to meet the woman trying to make historyin the KS-03: Sharice Davids. She is running to replace Kevin Yoder as the congressperson representing Johnson and Wyandotte counties and a northern bit of Miami county. This is a fundraiser but donations are not required.
People from Kansas joined citizens from 38 states this year to call for a moral revival across our country and have picked up the baton passed to us by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We have come together to condemn systemic poverty, racism, militarism, and ecological devastation. Did you know that the number of Kansans living in poverty is equal to the population of Wichita? That's unacceptable!! There are opportunities for you to stand with and work toward rebuilding KS communities.
If you would like to become more involved in this effort or want more information -- or have friends that would like to receive emails along with you -- consider completing this short survey for your local Kansas coordinating committee. #LoveThyNeighbor
"We are preparing for the elections by clarifying the best word choices to use when discussing gun violence as an issue. There are some words to avoid and other words to actively choose (see below).
All MomsDemand supporters and members are encouraged to help gun sense candidates! Go to gunsensevoter.org to find gun sense candidates in your area and encourage others to do the same."
"Kobach, secretary of state and a gubernatorial candidate, spoke about a school-grading plan last week to the Pachyderm Club, a Wichita Republican group. If elected, he said he’d implement a plan where public schools would be graded based on standardized test scores. Employees at a school that raises its grade by a letter year-to-year would receive raises or bonuses. Students at schools receiving an F would get a voucher and funding to go 'wherever they want to go,' Kobach said, including private schools, religious schools or home schooling."
Kevin Yoder has upped his Twitter feed since the primary ~ but it's laced with the same misleading information we've come to expect from him.
Yoder posted a truly gag-inducing tweet with Jan Meyers on August 17... saying he counted on her advice and thought of her as his mentor still!! Which sent us back into the archives to bring up this ditty: https://www.c-span.org/video/…
He should follow #3. And we should hold him to account for not!
OPPOSE SCOTUS NOMINEE BRETT KAVANAUGH
Our colleagues at Indivisible East Bay have put together a resistance toolkit for opposing Judge Brett Kavanaugh. The toolkit includes talking points and even a suggested calling script to get you started. Feminists Fight Back have also created a facts summary brief for your deep dive on the subject. Use all to prepare for your daily Calls or Visits to both Kansas Senators. We have so much to lose.
Additionally, there is a nation-wide protest against Kavanaugh's nomination scheduled for Sunday, August 26th. Join multiple like-minded local organizations to tell Senator Roberts to vote NO on Judge Brett Kavanaugh!
Help us show Senator Roberts that Kansans do not want Kavanaugh as a Supreme Court Justice! We will rally outside his office at 11900 College Blvd, Overland Park Kan. starting at 1:00 PM. Hosted by Move On and NARAL.
The White House is attempting to reduce financial protections for military members. The Military Lending Act is a longstanding law meant to stand between predatory lenders and young people too exhausted from boot camp to read the fine print on a loan. Trump's secretary for Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Mick Mulvaney claims he doesn't have the authority to enforce the law as written. This, combined with Devos' college policies and other sustained efforts to dismantle the CFPB, make it clear that Trump is ready to cripple many young people's chances of fully participating in the economy. Call your representative and ask that they demand that the CFPB protect our service men and women by enforcing the Military Lending Act.
